Privacy Statement
Effective date: 1 September 2026
Who we are: Daily Start (operated by Daily Start Limited), New Zealand.
Questions: privacy@dailystart.co.nz
Daily Start helps families feel reassured that an older relative has
started their day as usual, using simple home sensors, never
cameras, microphones, wearables, or anything they have to remember to do.
We collect as little as possible, we don't sell it, and you can ask us to
delete it at any time.
What we collect
From the family members who use the app
- Names and email addresses.
- Your notification preferences and the family "escalation plan" you
choose to record (who to ring first, who the nearby keyholder is).
- A record of when a family member taps "I called or visited," and any
optional "away" schedules you set.
About the household being watched over
- A name or label for the household and the person, and the morning
check time you set.
- Sensor events: the fact and time that a sensor
noticed something: movement in a hallway, or a door opening. For example:
"Front door opened, 7:43am."
- If used, the optional three-tap "how are you feeling" check.
If you register your interest before we launch
- The name, email address and (if you give it) phone number you type on
the get started form, plus how soon you said
you would like Daily Start running and anything you wrote in the message
box.
- We use it for one thing: to contact you about setting up Daily Start.
It is not a mailing list, we do not sell or share it, and you can ask us
to delete it at any time by emailing
privacy@dailystart.co.nz.
We delete these details once you have an account, or if you tell us you
are not going ahead.
For billing
- Subscription status. Card details are handled entirely by
Stripe, and we never see or store your card number.
What we never collect
- No cameras, no video, no photos.
- No microphones, no audio.
- No wearables and no location/GPS tracking of the monitored person.
- No call logs or text-message logs, on any device.
- No health or medical data. Daily Start is not a medical
device, not a fall detector, and not an emergency service. It notices
signs of a normal day, nothing more.
Why we collect it
Only to run the service you asked for: to recognise that the day has
started normally and reassure family, to let you know clearly when a sensor
is simply offline (so a connection blip is never mistaken for a problem),
and to handle your account and subscription. That's it. We don't use your
information for advertising, and we don't sell it.
Who can see it
- The family members in your household group, under the
sharing model you control (an owner approves who joins).
- The service providers who help us run Daily Start
(listed below), who may only process it on our instructions.
- No one else. We don't sell your data or share it for marketing.
Where it's stored and processed (including overseas)
Running the service means some information is stored and processed by
trusted providers, some outside New Zealand. We tell you
this plainly:
These providers keep information protected with safeguards comparable to
the NZ Privacy Act.
How long we keep it
- Raw sensor events are automatically deleted after 90 days.
- Account and household details are kept while your account is active.
- When you ask us to delete a household, we remove its data in full
(a full cascade delete). See below.
The notice we give the monitored person
New Zealand privacy law (IPP 3A) means the person being watched over must
be told, in a way they'll understand, that the sensors are there and what
they do. At setup we send or provide that notice, and we keep a record that
it was given. Daily Start is designed around this being open and consensual,
never hidden.
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can:
- Ask to see the information we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct anything that's wrong.
- Ask us to delete a household's data.
- Withdraw and close the account at any time.
To do any of these, contact privacy@dailystart.co.nz.
If you're ever unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can
contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner
(privacy.org.nz).
How we protect it
Information is encrypted in transit, access is limited to your own
household group, and our database backups are encrypted. No system is
perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to keep your information safe.
Changes to this statement
If we change this statement we'll update the date at the top and, for
anything significant, tell you in the app.
